Protocol for uncancelled stamps?

Ok my blog friends, what is the protocol for using uncancelled stamps? If they are US stamps, I try to use them. But what if they are from another country? The reason I ask is that I received a letter from Ottawa today and neither stamp was cancelled. I couldn't easily peel them off, but I think I could cut then off. I thought about including them in the reply letter. What would you do?

  1. Personally, I think it's unfair to use uncanceled stamps that have gone through the postal system already. It's just not worth it.

  2. Excellent point! The effort to peel or cut is sort of a waste! Maybe I ought to start collecting "mailed but uncancelled" stamps.

  3. Well they won't let you use them if you use tape. So it's pretty hard to get them off. You could cut them off and return them when you reply and let them decide! Today was my lucky day. I found 7 brand new stamps next to my car when I came out of the post office!

  4. I would collect them, or leave them on an envelope as I leave all envelopes I get. I would feel weird if my penpal sent me back my stamps.

  5. I agree with Rachel B. Our US Postal Service is in enough financial trouble, and I am more than happy to support them with using stamps. I have heard tell that modern stamps have something in them that makes it impossible to reuse them, even if they are uncanceled, but I find that hard to believe.

Collecting the stamps is a lovely idea!
